Headstone styles

Slant Headstones

A large angled face gives slant headstones more room for lettering and custom artwork, standing out with real prominence. Polished face, rock-pitched sides.

About this style

A slant headstone stands sixteen inches tall with its face cut back at a steep angle — a large, tilted canvas that holds noticeably more lettering and artwork than a flat or bevel marker. It reads from a distance the way an upright monument does, at a friendlier price: $1,850 for a slant set without a base, or $2,850 for a slant on a granite base. For many families it is the sweet spot between a marker and a monument.

The face is polished and the sides are rock-pitched, so the tablet keeps the character of quarried stone while the engraving surface stays crisp. An optional polished back opens up a second surface — room for a family name, an extra verse, or the part of the story that would not fit on the front. Everything is sandblast-engraved, in Sierra White granite as standard or in any of the blacks, grays, and earth tones we source from quarries around the world.

Adding a granite base lifts the tablet and broadens its footprint — a single slant sits on a 36" × 14" base, and side-by-side versions run up to 48" wide. Cemeteries differ on whether slants must be set on a base, so we confirm your cemetery's requirements as the first step of the design process, before you commit to anything.

Who chooses this style

A good fit when…

  • Families who want a memorial that stands up and reads from a distance, without the cost of a full upright
  • Designs that need room — longer verses, larger artwork, or engraving on both front and back
  • Cemetery sections that permit slants but not tall upright monuments
  • Couples marking side-by-side graves under one wide slant, up to 48 inches across

Personalization

Making it theirs

The angled face is the largest engraving surface of any marker style, which gives your design room to breathe: a catalog design is included in the starting price, or we can draw custom artwork and letter it to fit. A polished back can be added for engraving on both sides. Ceramic and porcelain memorial photos carry a lifetime warranty — we can merge photos and replace backgrounds — and painted surfaces carry a 10-year warranty. You approve every proof, and nothing is cut until you sign off on the final one.

Common questions

Families often ask us

Should we choose a slant with or without a base?

We make both. A slant without a base starts at $1,850; adding a granite base — 36" × 14" × 4" under a single tablet — starts at $2,850 and lifts the tablet with a broader footprint. Some cemeteries have rules about which is allowed, so we check your cemetery's requirements with you before you decide.

How is a slant different from an upright headstone?

A slant is a single thick tablet, about 16" tall, with an angled engraving face. An upright is a vertical tablet set on a granite base, polished front and back, with the most engraving room of any style. Slants start at $1,850 ($2,850 on a base); uprights start at $3,650 including tablet and base.

Can we engrave the back of a slant headstone?

Yes. The standard finish is a polished face with rock-pitched sides, and you can add a polished back for additional engraving — a family name, a verse, or extra artwork. We will show the back layout in your proofs alongside the front.

What does the starting price include?

Both slant prices — $1,850 without a base, $2,850 on a granite base — include a single name, dates, a verse, a design from our catalog, and standard Sierra White granite. Sales tax and cemetery setting or endowment fees are extra, and any additions are quoted before you approve the final proof.
